PROFITIS ELIAS PEAK
The highest worship place of Greece is the stone tabernacle of Profiti Elia on the so-called peak of Olympus, at 2.803m height. It is a small, one-space church which, according to the tradition, was built by St. Dionysus in the 16th century, and every July, on the celebration day of the Prophet, monks of the neighbouring monastery go up to the peak and have a Mass. Although no archaeological relics have been found, it is believed that the church was built on an ancient top sanctuary, as there was one on the opposite peak of St. Anthony.

MYTIKAS PEAK
The highest summit of Greece, Mytikas or Pantheon. Climbing up to the top of the gods mountain (2,918-m) is not an easy task. In winter, when the mountain is covered with snow, it becomes even difficult for alpinists. The dream of each Olympus mountaineer is to get a photograph near the metallic Greek flag on the top. Mytikas was conquered on
August 2, 1913 by the Swiss Frederic Boissonas and Daniel Baud Bovy and their climbing mate Christos Kakalos, the veteran Olympus guide from Litochoro.

DION ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK

The archaeological site of Dion is one Greece's most significant regions, as it is rich in antiquities, featuring streams gushing through ancient stones, a swift-water river Vafiras and lush vegetation with shady trees. A visit to the monumental ruins of Dion which belong to the Hellenistic,Roman and early Christian periods, is not only a visit to the historical past of a Macedonian city with an excellent, grid-like city plan of horizontal and vertical roads; it is also a trip of recreation through an archaeological park surrounded by natural beauty.

KANALON MONASTERY

Kanalon Monastery is in a panoramic location on the south-east side of Olympus and is only 6km from Karya village. Its name derives from the four streams/canals, whose springs were near the monastery and all together formed the river Ziliana. The monastery is framed by dense woods with fir trees, stone pines and oak trees. The monastery was in ruins and its cells deserted until September 2001, when its renovation work was completed and nuns reopened its doors to the public. Inside the churchyard is the chapel of Agios Dimitrios from 1681 with beautiful murals. Its katholikon, dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin Mary, is a three-aisled dome-covered church that was rebuilt in 1883.

KATERINI

Katerini, the capital of the prefecture, is a comparatively new city, which gradually became an urban centre after the exchange of populations in 1923 and the settlement of refugees from Asia Minor and Thrace. In the early 19th century, it only had 100 houses, while in 1912, the period of liberation, the city numbered 8,000 people.
It developed radically in the postwar years, 1950-1960, and developed into a modern city, a dynamic centre of the administrative, economic, and tourist activity of Pieria.
Concerning the origin of its name, it is believed to come from the church of Agia Aikaterini built by refugees, who settled in the early 18th century, coming from the Peninsula of Sinai. The name Aikaterini is used to refer to the city in relevant documents and maps of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Archaeologists and travelers, however, mention that the name Katerini is an alteration of the ancient city Atira (Katira, Kateri), which was located in the area and was still inhabited in Christian times.
Katerini is situated at a strategic point, along the road axis Athens-Thessaloniki. Presently, it is a modern densely constructed city with all the infrastructures of a major urban center that satisfy all contemporary needs. The central axis of the city is the pedestrian street, Megalou Alexandrou, with many cafes and shops. Some of the sights worth visiting include the central park, and the Municipal Gardens, with its rich flora, its tall trees and recreation areas. From Katerini of the mid-war years with its low houses only very few old buildings are extant, like the restored mansion of Tsalopoulos. Another attraction is the Folklore Museum of Katerini with relics of the refugees (costumes, homeware, icons, etc.) especially from Pontos.

PLATAMONAS CASTLE

Platamon Castle, dating back to the mid-Byzantine period (10th century), was built over the grounds of the ancient city of Heraklion and was restored by the Franks after 1204, the Byzantines during the 14th century, and the Turks. It is one of Greece’s best-preserved castles consisting of a defensive stone-wall and an octagonal fortress tower. Recent excavations have revealed a Byzantine church, dating between the 10th and the 11th century, houses belonging in the same period, an 18th century chapel, as well as storage spaces and a part of the wall from the Hellenistic period (2nd century B.C.)
Controlling the passages of Olympus towards southern Greece, Platamon Castle was targeted by many foreign conquerors, but, also, by Greek revolutionists during 1821. It is open to visitors during the hours provided for archaeological monuments. During summer, it hosts many of the events organized within the context of the Olympus Festival.
