The village Gonnoi was once called Dereli, but was renamed when the ruins of the ancient Perrhaebian city of Gonni were discovered near the shores of Pinios. This ancient fortified city was built upon three hills: Kathia, home of the ruins of the temple of Athena Poliada, Kondylos, where Zesti Vrysi is situated today, and Gonnokondylos, which is in the northern part of today’s village. The surrounding area is steeped in olive trees, almond groves and vineyards. The position where the ruins of the ancient city of Gonni were found provided an excellent lookout over the Tempi pass.
