Profitis Elias peak

Profitis Elias peak
The highest place of worship in Greece is the stone chapel of Profitis Ilias, at the peak of Mount Olympus with the same name, at an altitude of 2803 metres. It is a single-space church which, according to tradition, was built by Agios Dionisios in the 16th century. Every July 20th, on the day of the feast of the Prophet Elijah, monks of the neighbouring monastery climb the peak and perform a service. Although no archaeological remains have been found, it is thought that the chapel was built on top of an ancient summit sanctuary, just as it occurred on the opposite peak of Agios Antonios.
