At the archaeological park of Dion, you will come across the great legacy of ancient Macedonians. Dedicated to the worship of Zeus, the leading deity of the Greek pantheon, Dion has emerged as the religious center of the Macedonian Kingdom by the end of the 5th century BC. Expanding  over an area of 1,500 acres, it consists of city wall remains, the sanctuary of Zeus, theatres build during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, private and public buildings, the stadium and the necropolis. You can’t help but stand in awe of the Sanctuary of Zeus knowing that this is where Alexander the Great stood himself offering sacrifices before departing on his amazing military expedition to Asia.

One of the most impressive buildings, still surviving, is the ancient theatre which is attributed to the Hellenistic period. Audiences attend there theatrical performances during the Olympus Festival in summer.
