Route length 9km, moderate difficulty level, duration approximately 6 hours.
Rising to an altitude of 1100m, the village of Kokkinopilos (or Kokkinoplos) is 34km away from Elassona. Though the least known out of all Olympus’ routes, it is just as interesting, offering great vistas. Following the E4 hiking trail from Kokinopilos and after reaching the “Roudi” fount, you ascend to the ridge between the peaks of Anthimos (1,198 m) and Kitros (2,416 m). From there you continue to “Nana” (2,284 m) – “Steni Salatoura” (2,089 m). and right after you go downhill following the livestock path through which you reach the torrent’s bed, “Xerolakki” (position of Mega). From this point, you take the way back to the village of Petra.
The Kokkinopilos-Petra route may also be done by car following the Katerini-Elassona (36,8km) highway.
